The Threat and the OriginBefore radar became widely available and perfected, the United States realized its coastal and inland defenses were highly vulnerable to long-range bombers. Because military personnel could not be spared to watch every mile of the coastline and borders, the U.S. Army—with help from the American Legion—began organizing civilians into a formal aircraft detection network.How the AWS OperatedThe AWS system relied on a highly coordinated chain of civilian volunteers and military personnel:Observation Posts: Thousands of lookout posts were built on the East and West Coasts, mountaintops, and atop buildings. Volunteers (primarily women, teenagers, and men ineligible for the draft) used binoculars and reference charts to scan the skies for unidentified or enemy planes.Filter Centers: When a plane was spotted, volunteers called in details—such as altitude, direction, and aircraft type—to classified "filter centers". Largely staffed by female volunteers, these centers tracked the plotted flight paths on massive maps.Interception: Filter centers networked the civilian spotters directly with Army Radar Stations and interceptor commands. If hostile aircraft were suspected, military command posts would scramble fighter planes to intercept them.Evolution and LegacyWhile the AWS spotted very few enemy aircraft—notably a small Japanese seaplane that dropped incendiary bombs over Oregon in 1942—the program provided vital early-warning coverage and bolstered domestic morale. As radar technology became increasingly sophisticated in the latter half of the war, the AWS adapted and integrated radar data directly into its tracking systems. The program was officially deactivated at the end of the war but served as the foundation for the Cold War-era Ground Observer Corps.p>
